Photosynthetic microorganisms have great potential for the sustainable production of biofuels and other valuable products. My research focuses on using a synthetic biology approach to engineer such organisms to increase bioprocess viability. For example, developing novel genetic tools to improve the efficiency of the harvesting and product extraction steps of a bioprocess, as well as methods to effectively regulate these tools. These advances are expected to lead to a truly sustainable and viable bioindustry based on photosynthetic microorganisms.
